Since coming to New York, David has been developing a body of work inspired by the organic geometries found in the natural and scientific worlds. The “Particle Study” series is based on forms and patterns found in cloud and bubble chamber diagrams used by physicists to study the collisions of subatomic particles. The “Figure Study” series is the result of his long-standing interest in figure drawing, and the motion, volume and energy contained within and activated by each pose. His influences come from science, literature, art and design and the relationships that can be found between them.
The medium is oil pastel on museum board. The pastel is first applied and blended using turpentine. Additional layers are added and blended with the fingers, leaving a smooth, polished surface.
Originally from California, David lived in both Los Angeles and the San Francisco bay area before moving to New York in 1999. He studied art, design and computer science at the California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, California. It is there that he began studying landscape and figure painting, working regularly in both watercolor and oil pastel. He has 15 years experience as a graphic and environmental designer, with projects ranging from branding and identity to retail, exhibit and interiors. His work is currently on view at the Ambienti Italia Showroom at 285 Spring Street in New York.
Past show include: High Street Design (Millville, NJ), “The Drawing” group show, September 2004 Pacific International Pastel Society, October 2003 – best of category (Abstract) Salmagundi Club (NYC) Non-members Juried Exhibition, June 2001
